Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicinescalled Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.
Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (also known as androgeneticalopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss inmen. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from usingPropecia.
How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

Finasteride tablets containing the active ingredient finasteride are used to treat about2million men in the UK. Most cases of male pattern hair loss are caused by DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which can lead to permanent scalp hair loss. If left untreated hair on the scalp can grow back 2-4 years. Finasteride tablets contain the active ingredient 3-α-reductase inhibitor finasteride.
Finasteride 5-alpha reductase inhibitors such as finasteride work by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of the hormone that contributes to hair loss.
This leads to a17.5% risk of experiencing hair loss. Finasteride 3-alpha reductase inhibitors such as finasteride work by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of the hormone that leads to hair loss. This leads to a17.5% risk of experiencing a balding condition.
DHT causes the scalp to get flaky and thinner, making it harder to grow hair. This leads to the formation of film on the scalp which can cause permanent scalp hair loss. In men who have taken finasteride for more than 4 years, the average hair growth rate has been reduced.
Finasteride 5-alpha reductase inhibitors such as finasteride work by inhibiting the 5-alpha reductase enzyme (involved in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone). This enzyme is linked to the process that leads to the change in the amount of DHT in the body.
Due to the way Finasteride works it can lead to a17.5% risk of experiencing thinning of the hair on the scalp.

If you miss a dose of Propecia take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
If you are taking additional medication to treat your male pattern hair loss you may need to take a break before your next dose. This is because Propecia can affect the way other medications work and may affect how Propecia works.
I have not been able to find any information about the effects of taking additional medication to treat male pattern hair loss. Please contact my doctor or pharmacist to find out whether there is a suitable treatment for male pattern hair loss in men.
Hi all,
I've been on the Propecia and it's been working wonders. I have tried finasteride, minoxidil and propecia for years. I am still worried about losing hair on my top one's and the problem with those two is that I have a lot of hair and the one on my top has become very thin. I do have a question on how to start the hair loss treatment. Ive been using minoxidil for a while. I have no problem stopping the application. I also read that Propecia is used to treat men and women (male and female). I would like to know how to begin a treatment on finasteride or minoxidil. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
I've been on Propecia for a while now and it works wonders. I am on 5mg of finasteride. I was just curious how the finasteride works for me. I read that the finasteride is used to treat male and female pattern baldness. Does anyone know a reliable treatment for male and female pattern baldness and its efficacy?
I've been on Propecia for a few years now. I've used it for years and it's really helped my hair grow. My hair has only been getting thicker over the years. I've read about the hair loss treatment with Propecia which I know is the only way I can stop it. It has been very effective, but I haven't experienced anything like it before. I have tried all the pills and tried everything in the web. I've been losing my hair for about a year and a half now and it's all gone. The only thing that works is I got a bit of a break from it all and it's all been amazing. I'm still losing my hair and I think I might have to get off the Propecia but it works for me.

A new study has found that finasteride (generic name: Finasteride) is effective at slowing down the growth of hair loss in men who have gone through the menopause.
A study of men who have gone through the menopause and have been using finasteride has found that this drug can be used to help slow the progression of hair loss in men who have not gone through menopause. Results published in the British Journal of Clinical and Experimental Internal Medicine (BJICEMI) show that patients with hair loss had significantly greater hair growth on the top of the head and hairline recession, and that there was a significant reduction in hair loss in men who had used finasteride. BJICEMI found that the combination of finasteride with minoxidil, a hair loss treatment, significantly slowed down hair loss in men who had been using finasteride for six months or more.
While the results may not be seen in men who have gone through menopause, they do indicate that finasteride can be used to treat male pattern hair loss.
Finasteride is the brand name for a drug known as finasteride, also known as and 5-HT2-Receptor Antagonist. The drug works by blocking the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that causes hair loss. The drug has been used by millions of men to treat and prevent hair loss and has been shown to be effective at slowing down this process. Results published in BJICEMI show that patients who have taken finasteride and who have been using finasteride for at least six months experienced a significant increase in hair growth on the top of the head and hairline recession. In fact, the results were similar to those of a study that compared the drug to a placebo. In that study, men who had taken finasteride for six months had increased hair growth from 3.4% to 5.2% and those who had taken finasteride for six months had increased hair growth from 4.5% to 4.8%.
The study found that finasteride and minoxidil both increased hair growth in men who had gone through menopause. Men who have taken finasteride and who have been using finasteride for at least six months have increased hair growth from 5.2% to 5.4% and that hair growth was not seen in those who had taken finasteride and who had used finasteride for six months. A separate study in the Lancet found that taking minoxidil in combination with finasteride improved hair loss by 5% to 8.3% in men who had gone through menopause. In addition, the study found that the combination of finasteride and minoxidil had a significant effect on hair loss in men who had gone through menopause. These results may have been influenced by the fact that finasteride and minoxidil are both used to treat male pattern hair loss.
The study was published in BJICEMI. The results are based on a single, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 5,000 men who had gone through menopause and had been taking finasteride for at least six months. Participants were randomly assigned to take finasteride or a placebo. The men who took finasteride and who were on placebo were also asked to rate their hair loss on a scale of 1 to 5. Men who were taking finasteride were instructed to take the drug twice daily for six months. A total of 9,906 men were randomly assigned to take finasteride or placebo, and were asked to rate the amount of hair loss in the 12 months following their treatment with finasteride.
The men who took finasteride and who were taking placebo were given a daily dose of 1.5 mg of finasteride. Participants who took finasteride and who were on placebo were given a daily dose of 1.5 mg of finasteride for 6 months. The men who took finasteride and who were on placebo were given a daily dose of 1 mg of finasteride. Participants who took finasteride and who were on placebo were given a daily dose of 5 mg of finasteride. Participants who took finasteride and who were on placebo were given a daily dose of 5 mg of finasteride for six months.
The study is being conducted at the University of Cincinnati hair loss clinic, a research institute. The results will be published in BJICEMI in June.
